Before Chopra, discus thrower Vikas Gowda is the only Indian to finish in the top three in the Diamond League meet. Gowda had finished twice in 2012 in New York and second in Doha in 2014 and Shanghai and Eugene on two occasions in 2015.

Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Jakob Vadlage of the Czech Republic, competing in Lausanne, is on top with 20 points, followed by Germany’s Julian Weber (19 points) and world champion Andersen Peters (16 points) of Granada. .

Webber is not taking part in Lausanne, as well as Peters who is recovering from injury after being attacked inside a boat in his home country earlier this month.

He has participated in eight Diamond League meets so far – three in 2017, four in 2018 and one this year. He had two fourths, the second being in Doha in May 2018, when he threw 87.43m before taking second place in Stockholm.

Chopra withdrew from the multi-sport event just two days before the Birmingham Commonwealth Games (July 28-August 8) after his medical team advised him to rest for four weeks.
