Senior TMC leader Firhad Hakim was on Tuesday sworn in as the Mayor of Kolkata, promising to provide better civic services and ensure overall development of the city. Protem Chairman Ram Pyare Ram administered the oath to Ward 82 Councilor Hakim at a function at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) headquarters on SN Banerjee Road.

He said, “My aim is to ensure that Kolkata becomes the best city. I will work as the ‘Pradhan Sevak’ of the city. We promise to provide better civic services and ensure the overall development of the city.” second term. The Minister for Transport and Housing in the Mamata Banerjee government, Hakim was first appointed the Mayor of Kolkata in December 2018 following the sudden exit of Sovan Chatterjee.

He was appointed administrator of the civic body after the term of the first board ended in May 2020, but elections could not be held due to the pandemic. Atin Ghosh took oath as deputy mayor along with Hakim, while Mala Roy took oath as president.

The members of the Mayor-in-Council were also administered the oath. TMC won the KMC election by winning 134 out of the total 144 wards. The BJP managed to win only three wards.

The Left Front led by the Congress and the CPI(M) won two wards each, and three independents also won. TMC has been in power in the civic body since 2010.

In the KMC’s 145-year history, nationalists such as Chittaranjan Das, Subhash Chandra Bose and Bidhan Chandra Roy, also a former chief minister, occupied the mayor’s chair in independent India. Hakim is the first Muslim mayor of Kolkata after independence.
