Sania Mirza’s dream of winning her maiden Grand Slam mixed doubles title came to an end on Wednesday, July 6 as Indian tennis star lost to Croatian partner Mate Pavic in the mixed doubles semi-finals. In SW19, Sania and Pavic lost 6-4, 5-7, 4-6 to defending champions Neil Skupski and Desira Kravczyk in a tough on Court Two.

Sania Mirza and Mate Pavik were on a set and a break and looked set to get the job done in straight sets, but the Indo-Croatian pair lost their momentum as Skupski and Kroczyk broke their level through the second set. Raised up in the middle.

Skupski and Krawczyk won the second set 7-5 and forced a decider. Sania and Pavik took a break in the third set, but were quickly back in line. However, at 5-4, the defending champions broke Pavic’s serve to make it to Thursday’s final.

Sania Mirza gave it all with what is likely to be her final match at Wimbledon as the Indian star announced earlier this year that she would retire from professional tennis at the end of the season. Sania hit those scintillating forehand returns that took the fans down memory lane but it wasn’t enough against the gritty Skupski and Krojcic.

Sania, who won the Australian Open and French Open mixed doubles titles with Mahesh Bhupathi in 2009 and 2012 respectively, was bidding to reach her maiden mixed doubles final at Wimbledon. The Indian star, who won 6 Grand Slam titles, won the mixed doubles US Open title with Bruno Soares in 2014.

However, sixth-seeded Mirza and Pavic can be proud of their run at Wimbledon 2022, in which they ousted fourth-seeded John Peer and Gabriella Dabrowski, who won the French Open mixed doubles title in 2017 with Rohan Bopanna.

Notably, Sania crashed out in the first round of the women’s doubles competition along with Lucie Hradeka.
