The defending champions, bidding for their fourth consecutive Wimbledon title, were out-of-sorts several times against Kwon, who brought a vibrant mix of tennis, from soaring forehands to delicate drop-shots on center court .
The 24-year-old Korean broke Djokovic’s serve in the fourth game of the second set and won with a drop shot and a big serve.
But the 35-year-old Serb has recovered enough of his trademark consistency to face the challenge while aiming to win his 21st Grand Slam title.
Djokovic, who did not play any grasscourt warm-up before the championship, won his first match with an ace on point and will next meet Thanasi Kokinakis or Kamil Mazchrzak.
