A woman has been arrested for allegedly demanding extortion of crores of rupees by threatening to accuse Maharashtra Social Justice Minister Dhananjay Munde of rape. The accused Renu Sharma (40) is the sister of Karuna Sharma, who had claimed last year that she was the second wife of the NCP leader.

An FIR was lodged against Renu Sharma at Malabar Hill police station on the complaint of Munde, following which the crime branch of Mumbai Police took the matter into its own hands and arrested Renu from Indore in Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday, an official said. . He was produced in a court in Indore and brought to Mumbai on transit remand, they said.

Renu Sharma had allegedly sought Rs 5 crore cash and a shop, mobile phone and other expensive gifts from Munde by threatening to defame him by filing a complaint of rape, the official said. The officer said that Munde initially gave her a mobile phone worth Rs 3 lakh and Rs 1.42 lakh through a person, but when her demands were not met, she approached the police, the officer said, adding that the probe was on.
