Udhagamandalam, Tamil Nadu:

A 40-year-old woman was crushed to death by a wild elephant when she was on her way to empty stomach outside her house near Gudalur in the Nilgiris district in the early hours of Saturday, the second such incident in the last two days, police said.

Malu (40) was attacked and killed by a wild elephant near his house at Ovale Farms on Saturday midnight.

Forest department officials reached the spot and sent the body to the Gudalur government hospital for postmortem.

On 26 May, Anandan was attacked by a wild elephant near Aruttuparai in Ovale, when he was on his way to open his tea stall at around 6 am, killing him on the spot.

After the death, the villagers protested.

Forest department officials immediately swung into action and brought two kumkis – domesticated elephants – from Mudumalai Tiger Reserve to drive away the wild elephant.

After the death, the agitated villagers demanded the forest department to take out five other elephants roaming in the nearby villages and take immediate measures for the safety of the local residents.

The department has also issued a warning to the villagers not to venture out alone.
