Women drivers will go door to door in all gram panchayats Dharwad Driving lessons for over 50 women from District Self Help Groups (SHGs) to pick up garbage will start soon.
Sanjeevani SHGs formed under the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM) and registered under the State Cooperative Act comprise an average of 10 to 20 women members, who receive livelihood training and financial assistance through NRLM and the Karnataka State Rural Livelihood Promotion Society (KSRLPS). These sessions are for women from Self Help Groups who were already involved in this initiative and who have expressed their interest in working for garbage collection and received training on segregation of waste in dry and wet conditions. This is the first of its kind effort in Dharwad district. Dharwad Zilla Panchayat CEO Suresh Itnal said that door-to-door garbage collection was started in 89 of the total 144 gram panchayats. In this campaign three members are included for one tipper in each gram panchayat.
In the first phase, 59 women out of total 432 are planned to be trained. Driving lessons will be given at the Driving Training Center of NWKRTC. “After the training under the first phase is over, we will send the second batch,” he said.
At present, two women are driving auto tippers in two gram panchayats of Dharwad district. Mahrunnisa Mulla Shivalli Gram Panchayat and Manjula Madanbhavik The Gram Panchayat of Marwar is driving an auto tipper and picking up the garbage. Suresh Itnal said, “Since he had a driving license, he was allowed to drive an auto tipper.”
The local members of the SHGs identified for garbage collection and disposal were given training for five days on how to collect, segregate and dispose of the already collected waste.
