Women’s safety should be society’s responsibility: LG

Expressing unhappiness over incidents of violence against women in the country, Lieutenant Governor Tamilisai Sundararajan on Tuesday said that the safety of women is a collective responsibility of the society.

“The condition of women has improved a lot in the last few years but disturbing incidents related to the safety of women are still happening across the country. The reports of girl students being harassed by teachers in schools are disturbing. Security should be the responsibility of the entire society,” he said while inaugurating the International Women’s Day celebrations organized by the Puducherry government here.

Women are no longer confined to homes. They have made their mark in all fields but women should put in more effort to excel in all fields, said Ms. Sundararajan.

“Promoting economic self-reliance of women through education is the best way to empower them. Women should also come forward to play the role of entrepreneurship in the society,” said the Lieutenant Governor.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said the Union Territory has shown the rest of the country that making women the title holders of property can improve their status in the society. He said that the government’s decision to give concession in registration fee if the property is in the name of a woman has gone a long way in providing security to women.

He also promised to give subsidy to women entrepreneurs. He said that the Anganwadi workers whose services have been regularized recently, they will be given salary in a few days. Agriculture Minister C. Jakoumar, DMK MLA Anibal Kennedy and Secretary Uday Kumar were present.
