World Arabic Language Day 2021: Saturday, December 18th marks World Arabic Language Day which celebrates the cultural diversity and spoken language of the Middle Eastern region. The annual celebration of Arabic culture falls on the same day in 1973 that the United Nations General Assembly adopted Arabic as the organization’s sixth official language.

Not much is known about the father of the Arabic language or the founder of the ancient language, but the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) states that the language first emerged in the north-west of the Arabian Peninsula.

Arabic is described as a member of the Semitic family of languages ​​which also includes Hebrew and Aramaic.

The earliest traces of the Arabic language date back to the 8th century BCE, and have been defined and refined over time. A significant amount of Arabic language development occurred between the 3rd and 6th centuries AD, with further additions to the script in the seventh century AD when auxiliary signs were added to the letters to avoid confusion over how the text was read.

The tenth century saw intense interest among Arabic linguists. This period saw the compilation of six Arabic dictionaries aimed at introducing more specialized functions as well as special varieties of vocabulary such as synonyms and antonyms.

World Arabic Language Day 2021: Theme

UNESCO has declared the theme of 2021 World Arabic Language Day as ‘Arabic language, a bridge between civilizations’. In a statement shared by UNESCO, this year’s event is a call to reaffirm the important role of the Arabic language in connecting people through culture, science, literature and many other fields.

The theme highlights Arabic’s historical role in creating and spreading knowledge, as well as in enhancing dialogue and creating peace.

UNESCO noted in its statement that Arabia was the common ground, and connector, which represented a mirror to the prosperous human existence and provided access to many resources over the centuries.

Describing its 2021 themes as having immediate relevance, UNESCO said that, “It recognizes the changing world and the imperative to strengthen dialogue between nations and peoples.
