World Book Day: Date and theme for this year

World Book Day is celebrated on 23 April. The day is celebrated to celebrate the love of reading and learning new things. Many programs and campaigns are organized to encourage people to read.

For this year, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has selected “Indigenous Languages!” as a theme. official statement Read, “Indigenous and vernacular languages ​​form part of the World Book Capital Network charter, and the charter recognizes a less rigid concept of ‘book’, i.e. acknowledges different forms of literature (including oral traditions).”

History and Significance

On this day, UNESCO along with international organizers who represent the three major classes of publishers, libraries and booksellers choose a capital to celebrate World Book and Copyright Day.

The day also celebrates the death anniversaries of some famous writers including William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. In 1995, at UNESCO’s General Conference in Paris, the date was chosen “to pay tribute to books and writers around the world on this date, to encourage everyone to have access to books”.

In her special message to mark the day, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said, “Indeed, books are an important vehicle for accessing, disseminating and promoting education, science, culture and information around the world.”

The United Nations has marked the day by sharing a creative GIF on Twitter. The message read, “Books have the ability to move the mind and captivate the soul. For many people, books provide both joy and comfort, especially in times of uncertainty.”

The official Twitter account of the Nobel Prize has shared a quote by Rabindranath Tagore, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913. It read, “”The highest education is that which not only informs us but also makes our lives in harmony with all existence.”
