World Environment Day 2022: 5 Most Fuel Efficient Petrol Cars for Sale in India

Having a good fuel economy car is one of the simple ways to save some expenses on fuel. The more efficient a car is, the less fuel it burns during daily driving. We take a look at some of the most efficient petrol cars you can currently buy.

Maruti Suzuki Celerio – 26.68 kmpl

Maruti has offered some very fuel efficient cars in the market for a long time now and the Celerio continues the trend. At 26.68 kmpl, the hatchback is the most efficient petrol car you can buy currently. Part of this comes in the Celerio’s new 1.0-litre engine which now features dual injectors and cooled exhaust gas recirculation for a more controlled combustion process. The Celerio is also lightweight and weighs between 800 and 825 kg depending on the variant. It is the AMT variant that is most fuel-efficient and the manual delivers 26 kmpl less.

Honda City E: HEV – 26.5 kmpl

Honda’s spring new City joins the five most fuel efficient cars with the e:HEV hybrid. The compact sedan has achieved its astonishing 26.5 kmpl claim thanks to Honda’s new e:HEV hybrid technology, which combines a petrol engine with two electric motors to power the front wheels. Unlike the mild-hybrid system, Honda’s e:HEV is a robust hybrid, meaning it gives the City the ability to run entirely on electricity at low city speeds, with the engine only shutting down while the battery is charging. IS – it charges the battery and does not send power to the wheels. As the speed increases, you will find that the engine provides power directly to the wheels.

Maruti Suzuki Wagon R – 25.19 kmpl

Maruti’s tall boy hatchback got a new heart as part of an update earlier this year. Apart from a few cosmetic updates, the Wagon R received Maruti’s new 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre DualJet engines, with engine start-stop technology bumping up the fuel economy. It is the 1.0-litre AMT model that is the more fuel-efficient of the two, making a claimed 25.19 kmpl of the 1.2 AMT’s 24.43 kmpl. Meanwhile the 1.0L manual is good for 24.35kmpl.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire – 24.12 kmpl

The DZire could once be said to be the most fuel efficient petrol sedan on sale in India, however it is the new city that has now taken that cake. The DZire along with its hatchback sibling Swift has been one of the best selling cars of Maruti in the country. The 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine is one of the naturally aspirated units in the segment developing 89 bhp and 113 Nm. As with the other Marutis on the list, it is the AMT model that is the most fuel efficient with the manual giving a slightly lower 23.26 kmpl.

Maruti Suzuki Swift – 23.76 kmpl

Maruti’s hot-selling hatchback, which is currently in its third generation, received a mid-lifecycle update early last year, introducing some new equipment and more importantly the 89 bhp DualJet petrol engine. The new powerplant brings with it an upgrade in power output as well as improved mileage, with the old 1.2 Mil claimed to deliver 21.21 kmpl.
