It’s World EV Day and appropriately we at carandbike are celebrating not only electric vehicles, but sustainable energy and transportation as well. One of the biggest barriers to the adoption of electric cars is range concerns. People can’t randomly top up the range of their vehicles because the batteries can’t be charged immediately and the charging infrastructure is a fraction for fuel pumps. But battery technology has made great strides in the last decade and we now have vehicles that can outperform internal combustion engine rivals. EVs are also different because the faster you drive them, they lose charge but when you get stuck in traffic due to a technology like regenerative braking, they quickly recover capacity. We take a look at EVs that have a longer lifespan.
Lucid Air Dream Edition
The brainchild of former Tesla Model S chief engineer Pete Rawlinson, the Lucid Air that will soon launch in the US will have a range of 653 km. And note that this is a limitation of the standard edition. But when we talk about the Dream Edition which is coming out first then that range is more than 832 kms from 800 kms. Most internal combustion engine based vehicles cannot offer that kind of range.
Tesla Model S
in 2020, Tesla The Model S claimed a whopping range of 647 km, but now a new generation of the Model S comes complete with a new motor and battery technology. The new Plaid model which is the fastest production car in the world, capable of covering 0-100 km in just 1.9 seconds, can still deliver a range of 637 km. When some other variant doesn’t offer this level of performance, the Model S will likely move on.
Rivian R1T
Amazon and Ford-backed Rivian are finally delivering the R1T pickup truck, one of the most anticipated vehicles of the year. It has an official range of 505 km which is pretty impressive for pickup and SUV standards. This has recently been confirmed by Motortrend’s first drive-by which has revealed a range of 483km in real-world conditions. As is always the case, the bigger the vehicle, the less range it will have despite a larger battery pack, but even so, for a first generation product the R1T shows just how good EVs are becoming.
Tesla Model 3
The Model 3 is Tesla’s cheapest car. But when it comes to offering longer range, it’s not too far from the Tesla Model S which offers really impressive figures. The longer range version of the 2021 Model 3 offers a range of 568 km which is ridiculous when one also takes into account the price of the car and its performance level.
Ford Mustang Mach E
Payab New to EVs, but the way it measures the range of its vehicles is a little different. It shares the figures with the heavy payload on the car while other manufacturers do it without the payload. And yet, the Mustang Mach E offers an impressive 491 km range over the Mach E. It promises similar figures in the upcoming F-150 Lightning pickup truck.
Porsche Taykan
According to EPA tests, the Porsche Taycan offers a range of 362 km which is nothing but decent, but several real-world tests have shown that the Taycan is much better than the EPA indicated because Porsche Takes a penalty for not doing all the tests prescribed by the EPA. Independently, the car covers a range of 450 km on a single charge which is quite impressive for a Panamera disguised as an EV.
XPeng P7
XPeng is often called the Tesla of China. Its P7 is basically the same as the Model 3 for the California carmaker. It takes advantage of the WLTP standard which is more liberal with range statistics, but still, there are some big numbers going on here. The standard performance model gets a range of 562 km while the super long range model which has a bigger battery can do 706 km on a single charge.
Mercedes EQS
The first luxury EV by Three-Point Star is basically the electric avatar of its icon – the S-Class.
