The Union of India adopted Hindi as its official language in 1950. According to Article 343, the Constitution of India states that the official language of India shall be Hindi in the Devanagari script. Rashtrabhasha Prachar Samiti, Wardha had conceptualized the first World Hindi Conference in 1973. It was organized on January 10, 1975 in Nagpur. Its aim was to promote the language on a global scale. The conference saw participation from 30 countries with 122 delegates.

World Hindi Day was celebrated for the first time on 10 January 2006. It was adopted by former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.
