World Liver Day 2023: Due to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

World Liver Day is observed every year on 19th April to spread awareness about the importance of liver health. Diseases like non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), hepatitis A, hepatitis B, liver cirrhosis and liver cancer are affecting people now more than ever.

Livemint spoke to Dr. Puneet Singla, Director & HOD – Liver Transplant & HPB Surgery, Marengo Asia Hospitals Faridabad about non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and having fatty liver.

In the modern world, with everything being done on motor vehicles, with most things being available on home delivery, almost no activity is done by an individual. Long commutes in metro cities have forced people to cut this time off from their personal lives.

“The westernization of lifestyle along with the above parameters have contributed to the rapid rise in this modern world pandemic. It is also known as a lifestyle disease,” said Dr. Puneet Singla.

It is often seen in combination with diabetes, hypertension, obesity and deranged lipid profiles, he added.

Management of fatty liver mainly depends on lifestyle changes in terms of improving food intake and regular exercise. The patient is suggested to have a healthy balanced diet with more protein and less fat and carbohydrates in the diet. Regular aerobic exercise for about 25-30 minutes, four times a week is good enough to help improve general health.

Diet control and regular exercise are more important than medicines. Rather, most patients do not require medications.

Symptoms of Fatty Liver

Most people do not experience any symptoms, and it does not cause serious problems. However, some symptoms may include mild swelling of the face, darkening of the neck, rosacea, jaundice, itching, and a rash around the mouth.
