World Record! Atal Tunnel recognized as longest highway tunnel

The Defense Ministry on Wednesday said the Atal Tunnel has been officially recognized by the World Book of Records as the ‘world’s longest highway tunnel above 10,000 feet’. The World Book of Records UK, is an organization that catalogs and verifies exceptional records around the world with authentic certification.

In addition, Lt Gen Rajeev Choudhary, Director General, Border Roads Organization (DGBR) received the award for the splendid achievement of the Border Roads Organization (BRO) in building this engineering marvel connecting Manali to the Lahaul-Spiti valley.

Atal Tunnel was dedicated to the nation by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 3, 2020. The 9.02 km long, strategically important, Atal Tunnel, which runs under the ‘Rohtang Pass’, was constructed on the Manali-Leh highway under challenging conditions. of cold temperatures in extremely difficult terrain.

Prior to the construction of the tunnel, the highway remained closed during the winter season for six months, separating Lahaul and Spiti from the mainland.

The construction of this tunnel has reduced the distance of 46 km on the Manali-Sarchu road and the travel time by four to five hours, providing all-weather connectivity on the Manali-Leh axis.
