Water is essential for the survival of all living species on this planet. World Water Day is celebrated every year on 22 March to raise awareness about the importance of fresh water and the management of this natural resource. Even though water is available in abundance on Earth, only about 2.5 percent of it is usable. Everything else is salt water, which cannot be consumed. Therefore, it is the responsibility of all of us to conserve water for the coming generations.

The theme of World Water Day this year is Groundwater: Making the Invisible Visible. It will be presented at the inaugural session of the 9th World Water Forum in Dakar, Senegal on 21 March 2022. The official website of World Water Day states that groundwater is invisible, but its effects are visible everywhere. Beneath our feet, groundwater is a hidden treasure that enriches our lives. Almost all liquid freshwater in the world is groundwater. As climate change gets worse, groundwater will become more and more important. We need to work together to make sustainable management of this valuable resource.

Since 1993, March 22 has been marked as World Water Day. Since then, the day has been observed continuously to raise community awareness about the importance of water conservation.
Importance of World Water Day
World Water Day is promoted globally by United Nations agencies. It urges people to address the serious water issues. According to the United Nations (UN) website, the main objective of the day is to “support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: water and sanitation for all by 2030.”
