Delhi Capitals played against RCB with 5 overseas players in the form of Meg Lanning, Marijan Kapp, Elise Capse, Jess Jonassen and Tara Norris in the playing XI.

Delhi Capitals began their opening match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2023 on Sunday as they faced off against Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Brabourne in Mumbai.

RCB skipper Smriti Mandhana won the toss and opted to bowl first against Delhi, although there were only 4 foreigners in the RCB lineup following WPL rules, just like in the IPL, DC fielded with 5 overseas players.

While the WPL rules allow only 4 overseas players, there is a minor loophole as per the league’s rules, a franchise can name up to five overseas players if a player from an associate nation is ranked fifth.

Interestingly, DC was the only team to have signed a player from an associate nation – Tara Norris – with the USA international being included in the playing XI against RCB.

Delhi Capitals were thus able to accommodate five overseas picks in their playing XI, with captain Meg Lanning herself, Marijne Kapp, Ellyse Capsey and Jess Jonassen among the other four names.

The match between RCB and DC was the second match of WPL 2023, with the league getting off to a great start as Mumbai Indians dominated Gujarat Giants in the opening match.

Harmanpreet Kaur’s sensational half-century propelled MI to a massive 207/5 and in reply, Gujarat Giants collapsed and managed a total of 64 runs.

They lost the first match of the WPL by 143 runs, which made fans remember the first match of the IPL when Brendon McCullum scored a sensational 158 to open the league.

Delhi Capitals were invited to bat first, with Lanning partnering Shafali Verma as opener and getting DC off to a promising start.

The Capitals openers stitched a 100-run partnership in 9.4 overs with Verma reaching his half-century in just 31 balls.
