WWE Hall of Famer Scott Hall Death: Is Hip Replacement Surgery a Result of Cardiac Arrest?

The 63-year-old WWE star Scott Hall recently breathed his last. Hall, then known as Razor Ramon, was put on life support after suffering multiple heart attacks. The WWE Hall of Famer developed a blood clot earlier this month due to complications from his hip replacement surgery. On Monday, March 14, Hall suffered 3 heart attacks and died a day later.

Expressing condolences to Hall’s family, friends and fans, WWE tweeted, “WWE is saddened to learn that two-time WWE Hall of Famer Scott Hall has passed away.”

According to the New York Post, Hall had hip replacement surgery last week. During the procedure, a loose blood clot led to serious complications. He was admitted to Wellstar Kinestone Hospital in Marietta, Georgia.

Experts have said that people undergoing any major surgical procedure may have an increased risk of heart attack, especially those who already have heart disease. A group of studies have claimed that hip replacement surgery has caused heart attacks in patients.

Executive Director – Interventional Cardiology and Head of Cath Lab, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute told Hindustan Times that any major surgical procedure performed under general anesthesia triggers the adrenergic system, which puts pressure on the cardiovascular system. He mentioned that people with pre-existing heart disease, sometimes, may not be able to cope with it, so they suffer a heart attack during or soon after surgery. The risk is further increased by discontinuing blood thinning medication to reduce bleeding from the wound, the expert said.

Mathur said that this is the reason why all patients above 40 years of age who are undergoing major surgeries, their body’s ability to withstand surgical stress is checked with a cardiac stress test. For people under 40, a simple echocardiogram works. Based on the results, doctors can be stratified for heart attack risk related to surgery, so they can also take necessary precautions, the expert said.
