Yogi Adityanath to News18: We have Muslim ministers too; We are against appeasement, not of any religion

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said in an interview to News18 on Friday that the BJP is not against any particular religion, but against the politics of appeasement.

Hitting out at the opposition’s politics of appeasement, Adityanath said his government does not discriminate. “Secularism does not mean opposing Hinduism, secularism does not mean appeasement,” he said.

The UP CM also explained his “80 vs 20” remark in recent election speeches. While the ratio was pegged to the Hindu and Muslim population in the state, Yogi Adityanath said it refers to the ratio of people who want development and security versus “those who want riots, goonda rajo and corruption”.

“There are 80 people who have benefited from our schemes, who want development, economic development, women security and farmers welfare. The other 20 are those whose criminal activities have been badly affected by the policies of our government,” the CM said. He also accused the opposition parties of keeping vote bank politics above national security.

Yogi Adityanath on Friday filed his nomination from his home constituency Gorakhpur assembly seat in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah. This is the first time that Adityanath, a former five-time Lok Sabha MP, is contesting the state assembly election as a candidate.

In 2017, when Yogi Adityanath became the chief minister, he had opted to become a member of the Legislative Council instead of contesting from the assembly seat.

According to the chief minister’s election affidavit, there is no criminal case pending against him and his assets have increased by around Rs 59 lakh in the last four years. At the time of being elected MLC in 2017, his assets were Rs 95.98 lakh, which has now increased to Rs 1,54,94,000.
