The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) Government of India has announced that applicants can choose to become an organ donor while applying for a driving license. The ministry has introduced an option in the driving license application form to pledge to donate organs in the event of a road accident death. Now, this is not a recent change, in fact, the government had first introduced this option in 2018 with the amendment made to the Central Motor Vehicles (CMV) Rules 1989. However, MoRTH India is now promoting it as part of ‘Azadi’. Initiative of the Amrit Mahotsav to celebrate and celebrate 75 years of India’s independence this year.

Therefore, if one wishes to opt for this while applying for a new driving license, learner’s license, or any license-related services, he/she has to select ‘yes’ on the ‘Donate Organ’ option in the application. And also choose which organ they want to donate. This information will come on the driving license which will help the medical personnel to identify them and take necessary action in the event of a road accident.

In some of these countries, the driver donor registry becomes the first point of reference when a person is pronounced dead in a hospital, before relatives are contacted for consent.
