You can now buy NFTs in select video games, here’s how:

French video game giant Ubisoft on Tuesday launched a platform allowing players to acquire and play non-fungible tokens (NFTs) in their games in the gaming industry’s first large-scale use of blockchain technology. NFTs are unique digital items that can be traded and are shaking up the world of culture and entertainment after being used in contemporary art, cinema and music projects.

Players in nine countries will be able to earn “digits” in limited editions on the Ubisoft Quartz platform starting Thursday. The online tactical shooter game “Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint” – whose production budget is similar to that of Hollywood movies – will be the first to use them.

Points are unique collectibles with their own serial number that other players can view. They can be vehicles, weapons or equipment and can be resold to allow other players to acquire them, even those outside the Ubisoft ecosystem.

“This is the industrial revolution of tomorrow. With new tools such as the development of blockchain and cryptocurrencies, we will be able to create new rules that will be implemented around the world,” Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot told French newspaper Les Echos.

Blockchain technology, which certifies digital transactions, including cryptocurrencies, will ensure the tracking of current and future owners of points through an asset certificate. Ubisoft has been working on introducing Digits for four years as part of its goal to operate within a “metaverse” virtual reality platform.

“Blockchain is laying the foundation for a new digital economy,” Ubisoft’s blockchain initiatives manager Nicolas Pourd told AFP. “As a video game actor, we cannot confiscate these tools. We see added value to our players in NFTs,” he said.
