The number of dengue cases across Noida is decreasing but hospitals are still reporting a large number of patients with fever. Therefore, the health department has sent an advisory to hospitals, asking them to track all cases of fever, conduct tests if required and report Zika positive patients immediately.
“We have increased surveillance for all government health centers and alerted private hospitals as well. As of now, there is no case of Zika virus in GB Nagar, but we are conducting tests to see if we find any symptoms in anyone,” said a senior health department official.
In Noida, Zika virus testing is being done at four centres, including Kailash, Fortis and Yatharth Hospital. Child PGI is the only government hospital which is conducting the trial.
Zika virus is caused by the bite of the Aedes mosquito; It is the same vector that causes dengue and chikungunya. It can present symptoms such as mild fever, conjunctivitis, headache, joint pain and skin rash. While most cases are not serious, it is easily transmitted. Symptoms usually begin two to seven days after a mosquito bite.
However, doctors said symptoms are usually mild and present in only one out of every four infected people. There is no specific treatment for this disease and doctors usually recommend plenty of rest and fluids and symptomatic treatment for fever and pain. However, pregnant women need to be careful as the disease can cause complications.
