India captain KL Rahul called Shubman Gill’s batting “pleasing to the eye” after Gill scored his maiden ODI century in the third and final match against Zimbabwe on Monday 22 August.

Shubman Gill’s maiden ODI century, which came in 82 balls, took India to 289 for the loss of eight wickets. In reply, Sikandar Raza also scored a century and came close to winning Zimbabwe, but a diving catch from Gill caught Raza midway and India completed a 3-0 clean sweep.

“He has been batting well since the IPL,” KL Rahul said in a post-match presentation. “So much pleasing to the eye. Didn’t look at him with overconfidence. It requires restraint, to show that that kind of disposition is good.”

Shubman Gill went on to score 130 runs before Brad Evans dismissed him in the final over. Gill was adjudged the Player of the Series, scoring 245 runs in his three innings. This was his second consecutive award as he was awarded the title during the ODI series against West Indies.

Gill scored 205 runs in three matches against West Indies. He missed out on scoring his maiden ODI century in the Caribbean as rain stalled India’s innings during the third match when he was trapped on an unbeaten 98.

“I was just trying to lower my dot ball percentage. I tried to hit the gap as much as possible,” Gill said after the third match against Zimbabwe. “When I went in, some bowlers were bowling well. It was important to get through. Once we got settled, we knew we could attack.

“The bat was great. So I changed it after 50, I wanted to save it. It feels great, good group of players. Feels good when you’re with the same bunch. My father is my primary coach I got my schooling after I got out in the second ODI, so I dedicate it to him.”
