Zoho CEO Sridhar Vembu says people who can’t speak English are ‘not stupid’

Zoho co-founder and CEO Sridhar Vembu defended Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and called out all of elite India who thinks people who don’t speak, read or write English fluently are fools. He further added that in his company, he consciously does not require English fluency for most jobs.

Adding further, he said that the country can progress only when ‘we get rid of that craze for English’. His tweet in defense of the Assam CM came after the minister was trolled on social media and called a ‘copy paste CM’.

Retweeting Sarma’s tweet, Vembu wrote, “Elite India’s prejudice that those who do not speak/read/write English fluently (which would be at least 95% of our population) are fools. We can progress only when we get rid of that English obsession. At Zoho, we intentionally do not require English fluency for most jobs.”

On 4 April, the Chief Minister of Assam responded to a purported video in which he was seen copying text prepared to fill the visitor’s book while visiting a state school. He said that he has no “hesitation” in admitting that he does not know Hindi and English very well.

“I went to an Assamese medium school and am trying my best to learn Hindi and English in my humble way. I must confess that I do not know English and Hindi very well, and I have no problem in admitting it. Don’t hesitate,” the Assam chief minister tweeted, reacting to the video that went viral on social media.

In the purported video posted on Twitter by Roshan Rai, Himanta Sarma can be seen writing in the visitor’s register with a ready-made text right next to him. A user named Roshan Rai had alleged, “Introducing the CM of Assam who can’t even write a paragraph in the visitor’s book without being copied.”
