100% orange juice may combat chronic inflammation: Study

A new study suggests that 100% orange juice (OJ) can significantly reduce inflammation levels and oxidative stress. Consuming a tall glass of freshly squeezed orange has the potential to fight chronic inflammation and oxidative stress in healthy and high-risk adults. Claims from the new study indicate that OJ may reduce interleukin 6, a well-known inflammation marker, paving the way for research on the topic.

Funded through an unrestricted grant by the Florida Department of Citrus (FDOC), the results of the study have been used to harmonize the work area for a larger FDOC-funded clinical trial, scheduled for 2021. Hoping to start eventually. The FDOC-sponsored review will be based on the benefits of consuming 100% OJ.

Published in the journal Advances in Nutrition, the results emphasize that nutrients such as vitamin C and other bioactive compounds found in oranges play a major role in improving one’s health. Hesperidin and 100% OJ, a primary bioactive compound in oranges, have been found to reduce two additional inflammatory and oxidative stress markers. It is important to note that chronic inflammation can play an important role in advancing chronic lifestyle diseases, including diabetes, cardiovascular and related diseases.

Gail Rampersaud, Florida Department of Citrus Registered Dietitian, noted in the findings, “This review tells us that some studies find benefits of 100 percent orange juice, but we need more data and larger results to draw more definitive conclusions.” Well-designed studies are needed. This analysis is particularly helpful as we and others plan for future research involving orange juice.”

The review examined published studies involving 100 percent OJ and was conducted by the Think Healthy Group and experts from Tufts University and George Mason University. Widespread scope and systematic reviews, however, have not met statistical significance, suggesting that more analysis is needed to reach conclusive evidence. The researchers cautioned that the studies had a moderate risk of bias because they included a relatively small number of subjects as well as a low strength of evidence.
