Beirut: Russian airstrikes kill 11 suspected operatives in desert areas of eastern Syria Islamic State The group, a war monitor, reported on Thursday.
Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the casualties of a decades-old conflict, said overnight attacks were focused on the area between Palmyra and . al-sukhna,
“Jihadi organization members are hiding in caves in this area,” observatory President Rami Abdel Rahmani said.
He said 11 IS fighters were killed in the attack and around 20 others were injured, some of whom were in critical condition.
Abdel Rahman said he had already counted a total of 229 Russian air strikes against targets in the Syrian desert this year.
Thursday’s strike was the deadliest of its kind since November, when the Observatory reported 16 casualties among jihadist ranks.
The self-proclaimed caliphate of the Islamic State group once spanned vast parts of Syria and Iraq and administered millions of residents.
A long and deadly military battle led by Syrian and Iraqi forces with the support of the United States and other powers finally defeated the jihadist proto-state in March 2019.
IS remnants mostly retreated to their desert bases, from where they continue to harass the Syrian government and allied forces.
The group is believed to be attempting to secure sources of funding through smuggling and racketeering, prompting observers to warn of a jihadist resurgence in the region.
