At least 11 people, including a child, were killed and over 25 injured when a Mumbai-bound private sleeper bus collided with a speeding truck and caught fire in Nashik, Maharashtra, in the early hours of October 8, 2022.

The accident happened at around 5.30 am near Nandur Naka in Nashik. It has been learned that out of 25 injured, the condition of three people remains critical.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each to the families of the victims. Guardian Minister Dada Bhuse told that unfortunately the private sleeper bus was going towards Mumbai from Yavatmal district. “I am going to the spot to assess the situation,” he said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed their condolences to the families through Twitter.

“A road accident in Nashik (Maharashtra) is heartbreaking. I express my condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in this horrific accident and wish the injured a speedy recovery.

Mr Fadnavis tweeted: “Very sad to learn about the unfortunate accident of a private bus and tanker in Nashik. Heartfelt condolences to the families who lost their loved ones. Praying for the speedy recovery of the injured.”

“All senior officers including Collector, Municipal Commissioner, Police Commissioner are on the spot to coordinate the rescue operation. All the injured have been admitted to the Civil Hospital and immediate assistance has been provided. Our colleague @PharandeDevyani Tai is also in the hospital for coordination,” he said.

According to the travel company, there were 30 passengers on board, and eyewitnesses told the media that as the bus caught fire, some passengers escaped through the windows, while many died. “We saw it but were helpless,” he said.
