12 out of 17 Congress MLAs join Trinamool in late night coup in Meghalaya

Mukul Sangma and MLA have already written to the Speaker

Former Meghalaya chief minister Mukul Sangma, along with 11 of the state’s 17 Congress MLAs, has joined the Trinamool Congress in a major coup for Bengal’s ruling party in the northeast. Meghalaya MLAs have already written a letter to Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh in this regard. There are 60 seats in the assembly.

Joining after party chief Mamata Banerjee was in Delhi and spoke openly about her plans for a united opposition – which made the Trinamool the major opposition party in the state.

Over the past few months, the Trinamool has been on expansion mode at the expense of the Congress – much of it at the expense of the Congress.

Ms Banerjee, known to share cordial relations with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, has not met her this time, although there was discussion about a meeting.

On being asked about this, the Trinamool chief got furious. Ms Banerjee said she had not sought any time with Sonia Gandhi, as “she is busy with Punjab elections”. Then he categorically said, “Why should we meet Sonia every time? It is not constitutionally mandated.”

Trinamool is trying to increase its presence in Tripura and Goa keeping in mind the next round of assembly elections to be held in these states.

In Tripura, the party is in a face-off with the state’s ruling BJP ahead of the civic polls to be held tomorrow. In Goa, it is up to Luizinho Faleiro, the former chief minister of the state.

Yesterday, Ms. Banerjee’s party made three major acquisitions – allowing her to consolidate her hold in at least two more states – Haryana and Punjab.

Besides Team India batsman Kirti Azad, Rahul Gandhi’s former aide Ashok Tanwar, and Janata Dal United Rajya Sabha MP Pavan Varma, who had dropped out with his boss Nitish Kumar.

Those who joined the party earlier included Abhijit Mukherjee, son of late President Pranab Mukherjee, former Congress MP from Silchar Sushmita Dev and daughter of late Congress veteran Santosh Mohan Dev.

In Delhi today, Ms Banerjee – whose massive victory in the April-May assembly elections in Bengal sparked discussions about leading the opposition’s challenge to the BJP in the 2024 general elections – said she would help oust the BJP. are ready to do. Uttar Pradesh.

She said she would visit Varanasi – the Lok Sabha constitution of PM Modi – and Mumbai’s major opposition hub to meet Nationalist Congress Party chief Sharad Pawar and Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.
