14 million Ukrainians displaced since Russian invasion: report

New York:

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi has said that 14 million people have been forcibly displaced from their homes since the invasion of Ukraine began on 24 February this year.

In a briefing to the Security Council on Wednesday, the UN refugee chief said, “The Russian invasion of Ukraine has seen the fastest and largest displacement in decades. Since February 24, about 14 million people have been forced from their homes.”

Filippo Grandi warned that Ukrainians are about to face one of the world’s harshest winters in extremely difficult conditions. “Humanitarian organizations have dramatically increased their response, but much more needs to be done to begin with ending this senseless war,” he said.

As the war in Ukraine continues, the UN refugee chief said the destruction caused by attacks on civilian infrastructure is quickly making the humanitarian response a drop in the ocean of needs.

He said that UNHCR’s focus is on helping displaced people in Ukraine, who are working under the able leadership of the government. Of the neighboring countries, Moldova needs special attention given its vulnerability.

“Meanwhile, in the European Union, we have seen an open, well-managed and all-shared refugee response that has proved to be wrong with many of the repeatedly repeated statements by some politicians: that Europe is full; that relocation is impossible. There is no public support for refugees,” he said.

On UNHCR’s response to the crisis in Ukraine, Grundy stated that they maintain a high level of preparedness for further population movements, both within and outside Ukraine, taking into account the various possible scenarios and the scope and limits of humanitarian assistance. Has happened.

It has responded to 37 emergencies around the world in the past 12 months alone in countries such as Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Myanmar and Syria.
