15 thousand deaths in Nagpur in April and May 2021, 75% more than NMC Kovid toll. Nagpur News – Times of India

Nagpur: City registers an overall jump of nearly 40% in the number of deaths recorded Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) Department of Birth and Death Registration in 2019, 2021 as compared to the pre-pandemic year.
A department official said there were 40,479 deaths in 2021, perhaps the highest recorded in a year in the city limits. 31,651 deaths were recorded in the year 2020, mainly due to the high number of deaths during the earlier covid Wave in September and October.
The maximum number of death certificates were issued in April and May 2021 when the second wave peaked in the district. According to the district health office data, there were 2,389 deaths in April 2021 and 1,514 in May.
According to NMC data, 15,383 deaths were recorded due to various causes in April and May 2021 combined. This is about 75% more than the officer covid toll for these two months.
So far, 10,319 persons, including 6,028 from Nagpur city, have succumbed to COVID-19 in Nagpur district.
Between 2016 and 2020, the city saw an average of 28,815 deaths every year. The monthly average death registration due to all causes has been around 2,500 for all the months except April and May 2021.
In April and May 2021, there were around 3,900 deaths due to COVID-19 and there could be 2,500 regular deaths every two months. The total death may include people from other Nagpur rural, other districts and states who died during treatment in the city and were cremated here. Still, around 6,400 deaths remain unexplained in the NMC limit.
The NMC official said that data from 2016 is easy as it is being uploaded on the central government portal. “Records prior to 2016 show the city’s annual death rate at 50% of the birth rate. Hence, 2021 probably saw the highest number of deaths so far,” the official said.
The official said that many of the deceased may not be residents of the city, but died here during Covid. “For the assistance of Rs 50,000 being given to the family of the Kovid victims, we are getting applications where deaths at home are mentioned but they have RT-PCR Positive report,” said the official.
The official said that the death certificate mentions the death of Kovid, but the claims of lack of RT-PCR report have been rejected.
“Cause of death is valid only if it is certified by a hospital or if supported by documentary evidence. The reason mentioned on the wharf copy is not acceptable as it is based on oral submission. Also, there is no provision to mention the cause of death on the death certificate. Hence, it is difficult to say how many out of 6,400 deaths are due to Covid,” the official said.
