Australia found themselves in a hole after they blew away the top half of their batting order within 12 overs.
Trent Boult (4-40) reduced Finch lbw for five wickets, prolonging the opener’s drought that remains a major concern for Australia.
Boult removed Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne in his successive overs before Matt Henry came on with a double strike, which included the wicket of David Warner (20).
Green and Carey pulled the hosts back into the competition with their positive batting but more play was on the cards.
