Bristol: reeza hendrix Scored his fourth consecutive Twenty20 fifty as South Africa beat Ireland by 21 runs in the first match of their series in Bristol on Wednesday.
Hendrix, who hit three half-centuries in the Proteas’ recent 2-1 series win over England, scored 74 runs for a total of 211-5 and shared a third-wicket partnership with 112. Aiden Markram (56).
Lorcan Tucker (78) and George Dockrell (43) kept Ireland in the hunt but their team’s hopes of victory went with them when the pair were dismissed for successive deliveries.
The target of 37 runs in the last two overs was never achieved with the Proteas’ ‘death-bowling’ specialist Wayne Parnell Proving his worth to all, he hit a six off Taylor Barry McCarthy on the last ball of the innings as Ireland finished 190-9.
Left-arm pacer Parnell removed opener Andy Balbirnie to return figures of 2–36, with stand-in Proteas captain Keshav Maharaj taking his left-arm spin and leg-spinner Tabrez Shamsi 2-37 to 2–29 .
Hendrix’s latest fifty came off 32 balls, which included seven fours and a six, while Markram achieved the landmark in 25 balls, including six fours.
The pair kept falling for successive deliveries before leg-spinner Gareth Delany caught Markram at deep square leg.
But Tristan Stubbs – 24 off 11 balls – and Dwayne Pretorius – 21 off seven – made sure the runs kept coming until the end.
South Africa suffered a setback before the start of the match, with captain David Miller denying a back spasm, with fellow batsman Heinrich Klaasen taking a place in the XI.
Proteas pacer Kagiso Rabada has already been ruled out of both matches in the two-match series that ended with an ankle injury in Bristol on Friday.
