1st Test: Karunaratne, Mendis slam centuries as Sri Lanka dominate Ireland on opening day

Sri Lanka got off to a good start after winning the toss and putting on a 64-run partnership with Nishan Madushka (29) for the first wicket.

Captain Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Mendis scored centuries and shared a record partnership for the second wicket to help Sri Lanka post an impressive 386-4 at stumps on the first day of the first cricket Test on Sunday.

Madushka took an edge of a ball from Curtis Campher which cut away from the right-handed batsman to catch wicketkeeper Lorcan Tucker.

Mendis joined Karunaratne at No. 3 and the pair shared a 281-run partnership for the second wicket, surpassing Bangladesh’s 267 for the fifth wicket by Mohammad Ashraful and Mushfiqur Rahim 10 years ago in Galle. Also the highest partnership for the wicket.

Karunaratne completed his 15th Test century playing his 85th match. He faced 235 balls and hit 15 fours for 179 runs. Mendis reached his eighth Test century but was dismissed for 140, trapped leg before by left-arm spinner George Dockrell.

Mendis faced 193 balls and hit 18 fours and a six in his innings.

Angelo Mathews was dismissed without scoring in just three balls after he was caught by Tucker trying to chase down a short and wide delivery from leg-spinner Ben White, leaving Sri Lanka at 348–3.

Seamer Mark Adair finally caught behind Tucker again with the second new ball and the score at 373 for Karunaratne.

Dinesh Chandimal 18 and night watchman Prabhat Jayasuriya were playing 12 runs till the end of the game.
