2 dead after tornado, severe weather ravages US state of Oklahoma

2 people were killed in Oklahoma when a tornado ripped through the US state.

Washington:

Tornadoes in Oklahoma and severe weather in the US state killed two people on Wednesday, local officials said.

Emergency management officials in the state’s south-central McClellan County confirmed the deaths in a Facebook post and said search and rescue efforts were continuing late into the night.

“Crews are responding to reported injuries and people trapped in shelters,” the post said.

“We’re doing a grid search in about a 10 mile path.”

Officials warned that the storm’s toll could rise as the full extent of the destruction became known.

Sheriff’s Deputy Scott Gibbons told local NBC affiliate KFOR, “As the night goes on, and the grid search progresses and information continues to come forward, unfortunately the numbers could rise.”

Footage from the broadcaster showed damaged and destroyed buildings around the small town of Cole, and debris strewn across the ground.

The National Weather Service office in nearby Norman, Oklahoma described “erratic” tornadoes and supercell storms in the region.

In a tweet shortly after midnight, the office said: “After the last 8 hours? Good riddance.”
