2 Patanjali TV channels spark controversy in Nepal – Times of India

Kathmandu: Two television channels owned by yoga guru Ramdev in Nepal have courted controversy after they were operated without registration.

Gogon Bahadur Hamal, Director General, Department of Information and Broadcasting, said, “Foreign investment in the media sector is prohibited as per the Nepalese law. We have not received any application to register these two television channels.”
“We have constituted a probe team to study the registration of television channels. If they have started broadcasting without prior approval, we will take action.”
MNC Patanjali is said to have invested in two channels where Ramdev and Acharya Balakrishna are the main promoters.
As per Nepalese law, foreign investment is not allowed in the media and film sectors.
But if a foreign television channel needs to operate from Nepal, it should fulfill all the necessary legal and other procedures.
During the ceremony, Prime Minister Deuba had assured that he would provide land to Patanjali for medical purposes.
Both the channels were part of Patanjali Group’s latest venture. Founded by Acharya Balkrishna in 2006, Patanjali began as an ayurvedic pharmaceutical manufacturing company in sectors including clothing (Patanjali Paridhan), dairy (Patanjali Dari), foodstuffs and more.
This is not the first time that a Patanjali product has come under controversy in Nepal.
Earlier in June, the Himalayan nation had banned the Coronil kit. The Ministry of Health and Population and the Department of Health, Nepal had banned until the coronil kit was registered with the department as per the rules of the Government of Nepal.
