The new 2022 Maruti Suzuki Baleno has officially gone on sale in India, and is priced from ₹ 6.35 Lakh, going up to ₹ 9.49 Lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The premium hatchback has an attractive starting price tag and is bound to attract a lot of new customers. In fact, the company has said that it has received over 25,000 pre-orders for the new Baleno in just 16 days, which is definitely a good number. In India, the Baleno primarily competes with the likes of Hyundai i20, Tata Altroz and Honda Jazz. So, does the 2022 Maruti Suzuki Baleno have a pricing advantage over its rival? let’s find out.

Maruti Suzuki Baleno And the Honda Jazz is only offered with a naturally aspirated petrol engine. At the same time, both the Hyundai i20 and Tata Altroz are offered in three engine options – a naturally aspirated petrol, turbo petrol and a diesel engine. In comparison to the Baleno, the Hyundai i20 starts at ₹63,000 more, while the top-end trim is ₹61,000 more expensive than the range-topper of the Baleno.
Hyundai offers it with 1.2-lite naturally aspirated petrol engine I-20, which is offered with both a 5-speed manual and Intelligent Variable Transmission or IVT. The model is offered in all three variants – Magna, Sportz and Asta, and prices start from ₹ 6.98 Lakh to ₹ 10.10 Lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). In comparison to the Baleno, the i20 starts at ₹63,000 more, while the top-end trim is ₹61,000 more expensive than the range-topper of the Baleno. But remember that the i20 gets a proper automatic transmission, while the Baleno gets an AMT or an automated manual transmission.

The base variant of the Tata Altroz is ₹35,000 cheaper than the Baleno, while the top-end trim is around ₹70,000 less expensive

However, remember, the Altroz is only offered with a manual transmission.

So, on paper, 2022 Maruti Suzuki has an advantage over the i20 and Jazz in terms of pricing. While cheaper than the new Baleno, the Altroz only comes in a manual option, which could be a deal-breaker for a good number of customers in this segment. Notably, when you consider the number of smart and segment-first features that Baleno gets, such as – heads-up display, 360-view camera, 9-inch HD touchscreen unit SmartPlay Pro+, and over 40 connected car features.
