2022 Yamaha MT-15 Review – carandbike

With the recent launch of MT-15 version 2.0, YAMAHA Keen to offer even more value for money and performance that attracts youth to the brand, something that the older model could not quite do. MT-15 It now gets a whole bunch of updates that aim to increase the performance and desirability quotient. And we had the motorcycle to see how true it is, spending a good weekend with it, covering a distance of about 250 kilometres.

2022 Yamaha MT-15 Update

Starting straight off with the biggest update, the aluminum swingarm, which replaces the box-section swingarm and 37mm golden upside-down forks on the older model. Borrowed directly from the R15 V4, both additions make riding a motorcycle a compelling affair. The front-end feel is smooth, which makes you more confident going into corners with the throttle open. Stability is another highlight, with the aluminum swingarm adding a lot to it, whether it’s high-speed runs or leaning into corners.

The new USD adds to the appeal, with the outer tube bolted to the chassis for stiffness and balance. Now, the flip side of this is that the suspension is rigidly tossed. So much so that, it will make you feel the sharp bumps in your spine. A softer setup makes more sense, especially on Indian roads. Thanks to the new additions and the existing Deltabox frame with a lighter curb weight of 139 kg, the motorcycle remains an amazing handling machine.

2022 Yamaha MT-15 Engine & Performance

The MT-15 continues to get the 155 cc liquid-cooled, four-valve engine shared with the YZF-R15. The motorcycle feels composed when running at a speed of 100-110 kmph. In addition, the vibrations creep onto the foot pegs and handlebars.

(The engine is high-revving, meaning it breaks into a song only after 6,000 rpm. This results in a slightly narrower power band which we prefer)

What has changed though is the character of the engine. The old MT-15 had a lively tune, while the new model sacrifices that explosiveness for better tractability. Since it is revving high, the engine breaks down in a single song only after 6,000 rpm. So, it has a narrower power band. A sturdier lower end would have made the engine even sweeter. The motorcycle can pull at a top speed of 30 kmph in 6th gear and this comes as a boon every now and then for riding on city roads. And the light vibe of the clutch, quite likable actually.

(MT-15 is a machine that handles beautifully, especially in corners)

Braking on a motorcycle is a mixed bag! The front disc offers good bite and progress, while the rear requires a bit more work, especially when you want to scrub up the speed in a jiffy. And this is where Yamaha could have offered dual-channel ABS, even if it is only as an option. His absence is a big drawback, we think.

2022 Yamaha MT-15 Design & Colors

With the cycle parts update, the new MT-15 gets new colours, including new Cyan Storm and Racing Blue color options, along with Ice Fluo-Vermillion and Metallic Black color options. Our test bike is the cool Cyan Storm, which is probably the coolest color around in our opinion. Apart from the new colours, the styling and design remains the same on the motorcycle and that is not a bad thing at all. The quality of plastics and materials used adds up but could still be better.

The instrument console on the 2022 MT-15 has also been updated and now gets new features like Bluetooth connectivity with Wi-Connect mobile app, call alerts, email and SMS alerts, and smartphone battery status. However, offering turn-by-turn navigation could have been a good option.

Being a streetfighter, the MT-15 offers comfortable ergonomics, with a forward-facing seating position and slightly rear-facing foot pegs. The wide and low handlebars provide a good buy for lock-to-lock turns and quick direction changes. But, if you are looking to ride with a pillion, especially on a daily basis, the MT-15 may not be the best choice, as it is small and not the most practical unit.

0 notes

The new Yamaha MT-15 version 2.0 gets significant updates as compared to the old model and the prices also go up by ₹12 to 13,000. If you want to buy one, you will have to spend around ₹ 1.6 lakh (ex-showroom). Is it worth the money? We say yes! Sure, it’s not perfect, it also has some wrinkles in its armor. But it’s a solid improvement over the older model, offers good performance and depending on your taste, it looks fancier and has good road presence. All the qualities you could want from a motorcycle under ₹ 2 Lakh.
