23-year-old Muslim Indian-American Nabila Syed creates history in US midterm elections

New DelhiDemocrat Nabila Syed, a 23-year-old Muslim Indian-American, wrote history by becoming the youngest member to be elected to the Illinois General Assembly, defeating Republican rival Chris Bose by receiving 52.3 percent of the vote. In one of the most polarized midterm elections for the 51st district of the Illinois State House of Representatives, a total of five Indian-origin lawmakers from the ruling Democrats were elected to the US House of Representatives, along with several other state legislatures. ,

Nabila Syed took to her official Twitter handle to thank people for voting and wrote, “My name is Nabila Syed. I am a 23 year old Muslim, Indian-American woman. We just flipped a Republican-held suburban district. ,

Adding to the heartfelt note, he said, “In January, I will be the youngest member of the Illinois General Assembly.”

In a follow-up tweet, Ms Syed said, “Thank you for the thread coming up tomorrow. We had an incredible team that made this possible. ,

She also posted an emotional post on Instagram where she wrote, “When I announced for state representative, I made it a mission to engage in dialogue with the people – to give them a reason to join our democracy.” And to look forward to better leadership. Represents their values.”

“We won this race because we were engaged in that conversation,” she said.


Nabila Syed graduated in Political Science and Business Administration from the University of California, Berkeley.

Apart from Nabila Syed, other elected Indian-American members included Raja Krishnamurthy, Ro Khanna, Pramila Jayapal and Ami Bera.
