A total of 2,313 nominations were accepted and 34 were rejected after scrutiny here on Saturday, district election officials said.

Apart from the corporation, which has 100 wards, there are three municipalities – Melur, Thirumangalam and Usilampatti, there are nine town panchayats in the district.

Out of 1122 nominations in the corporation, 25 were rejected due to different reasons and paper defects. Thus, 1,097 were accepted.

In municipalities, 475 were accepted and a total of seven nominations were rejected. In nagar panchayats, officials said that for 144 wards, 743 nominations were received and two were rejected, of which 741 were accepted.

Officials in the corporation said that there was an atmosphere of panic for some time when the nominations of some BJP candidates were eligible to be rejected. After stopping, when the staff explained the reason, the candidate and his advocate agreed. Similarly, some nominations of independent candidates were also rejected.

Officials said there was a delay in consolidating the accepted and rejected nominations in the Usilampatti municipal limits in the district.

As per the guidelines of the State Election Commission, the last date for withdrawal of nominations is Monday, after which the final list of candidates in the fray will be conveyed.
