24 more Muslim students suspended in Dakshina Kannada’s Uppinangadi for wearing hijab

Twenty-four Muslim students of the Government First Grade College, Uppinangady in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka were suspended on June 7 for violating the dress code.

Last week, the college suspended seven Muslim students on the same charge. Thus the total number of students suspended for wearing hijab Classes have gone up to 31.

Puttur MLA Sanjeev Matandur, president of the college development committee, said that to revoke the suspension, the students have been asked to give an undertaking in writing that they will follow the dress code prescribed by the college.

The MLA said that many students are attending classes, while some boys, who are supporting girls by wearing hijab in classes, stay away from classes.

He said the college would suspend the students for violating the dress code in defiance of the order of the Karnataka High Court and the decision taken by the committee.

On 6 June, UT Khadar, Mangaluru MLA and deputy leader of Congress in the Assembly, told media persons in Mangaluru that the students would have to fight the hijab issue Legally and not in the corridors of colleges. He said that students should focus on academics.
