He hit 15 fours and scored the winning run and completed the work of the hosts. The 27-year-old began his knock with an aggressive approach as he punched Wayne Parnell through wide point for four, before taking a fours brace from Enrique Nortje – a superb after a cut through third man Cover drive.

However, when Ishan Kishan (93) put his foot on the accelerator, Iyer took the role of the anchor and that allowed the young wicket-keeper batsman to play his shots with freedom. Iyer laid the foundation for a big victory with a massive 161 runs partnership with Kishan for the third wicket. Despite being traumatized by the cramp, Iyer was keeping his boundaries with excellent timing – one of which was slapped at extra cover for a four off Rabada to give him his second century in the format.

Former India pacer Irfan Pathan was impressed by Iyer’s match-winning knock and wrote on Twitter, “Great comeback from Team India. Top batting by Shreyas Iyer. Match winning 100.”

West Indies great Ian Bishop also praised Iyer for his short-ball tackle against a quality pace attack.

Bishop tweeted, “Looking at Shreyas Iyer’s high quality innings, he took up the challenges of the short ball.”

Several other former cricketers and fans also spoke highly of Iyer for his second ODI century, which helped India level the series 1-1 as the decider will be played in New Delhi on October 11.

The series’ designated vice-captain, Iyer, has been in top form in ODIs, scoring a century and four fifties in his last six innings.

Earlier, Mohammed Siraj led an inexperienced Indian bowling lineup to restrict South Africa to 278/7 when the visitors opted to bat.
