Los Angeles:

At least three people were killed and two police officers were wounded on Monday in a shooting that followed the temporary closure of schools in a New Mexico town.

“The suspect was confronted and killed at the scene,” said authorities in Farmington, a city of 50,000 people located about 200 miles (320 km) from the state capital, Santa Fe, and the public was not aware of the remains. There is no other danger.

Details of where and how the shooting took place were not immediately available.

In a statement posted to Facebook, the Farmington Police Department wrote, “There are multiple civilian victims with at least 3 dead.”

Multiple officers responded to the shooting and two were shot during the incident. He is undergoing treatment at the hospital and his condition is said to be stable.

The incidents are under investigation, and the identity of the suspect is currently unknown.

Local schools were briefly closed but cleared to reopen Monday afternoon, with Farmington Municipal Schools saying “all students and staff are safe.”

According to the non-governmental organization Gun Violence Archive, there have been more than 215 mass shootings in the United States this year.
