3-month-old baby fed hot rod 51 times to treat pneumonia, dies

In the tribal-dominated areas of Madhya Pradesh, the incident of hitting with hot sticks is becoming fatal.

Shahdol:

In a shocker in Madhya Pradesh, a three-month-old baby girl suffering from pneumonia was stabbed 51 times on the stomach with a hot iron rod as part of a “treatment” by a quack. The child, who had difficulty in breathing, died in the hospital after 15 days.

The incident took place in the tribal-dominated area of Shahdol district.

His body, which was buried, will be taken out for postmortem, which will take place on Saturday, officials said.

Shahdol collector Vandana Vaidh said, “When the women and child development officer reached the hospital, they found that a shocking case of superstition had taken place 15 days ago and the girl child had not been treated for pneumonia, which had worsened her condition.”

“A local anganwadi worker counseled the mother and requested her not to hit the child with a hot rod,” Ms. Vaidh said.

In many tribal-dominated areas of Madhya Pradesh, the practice of being pricked with a hot iron rod to “cure” pneumonia is common.

Dr. Vikrant Bhuria, doctor and president of the Youth Congress, said, “Chasing with bars can lead to death, it is a way of reducing the pain, but the problem is that infection can end up resulting in death.”

BJP spokesperson Dr. Hitesh Bajpai said, “Such a practice is still prevalent and I request the chief medical officer of the area to file a complaint and take strict action.”
