3 out of 4 smartphone users in India fear being separated from their mobile phones, study shows

A report by global smart device brand Oppo and Counterpoint Research on Friday said that three out of four people in India have nomophobia, which is the fear of being separated from their smartphone.

As per the report, around 72 per cent of smartphone users in India experience low battery anxiety at 20 per cent or less battery level, while 65 per cent of smartphone users go through emotional distress when the smartphone battery runs out.

The report titled ‘Nomophobia: Low Battery Anxiety Consumer Study’ looks into the consumer mindset to understand how low battery anxiety has become a major cause of this phobia.

As per the report, 42 per cent respondents use their smartphone most for entertainment, with social media being on top, 65 per cent users give up phone usage to save battery while 82 per cent limit their social media usage.

Research Director Tarun Pathak said that the smartphone has become our universe which enables us to stay connected personally and professionally and also for entertainment.

He commented, “As a result, many of us have developed a fear of being without our phones. As a result, people often feel anxious at the thought of running out of battery and being unable to use their phones.”

“The concern about low battery is higher among the working age group of 31 to 40 years than it is among the age group of 25 to 30 years,” Pathak said.
