35 major dams in Pune region 95% complete, 13% more than last year Pune News – Times of India

PUNE: The collective stock in 35 major dams in the region rose to 95% on Wednesday, said an Irrigation Department report.
The stock was up about 12% compared to 83 per cent in the same period last year, the report said.

The flow of water from the Panshet dam resumed on Wednesday after a gap of a week following heavy rains. The irrigation department may start releasing water from Varasgaon dam in the next few days.
The storage in both the dams is at its full capacity. Discharge was started. An official said there was no place to store the rain water.
The mass storage in the dams of Khadakwasla circle was recorded at 99.83% (29.10 tmc) on Wednesday. The water released from Panshet and Varasgaon flows into Khadakwasla. The storage of Khadakwasla was reduced to 96 per cent. But due to water flowing from Panshet and Temghar, the stock of Khadakwasla reached 100% on Wednesday evening.
An official of the Irrigation Department said that if the flow of water from upstream increases, water will start releasing from Khadakwasla.
“Water stock in most of the dams was in very good condition at the end of August. The water level of the dams is at its full capacity. We have stopped releasing water from most of the dams due to fall in rainfall. But heavy rains,” the official said. In the midst of forecast, water release as per requirement may have to be resumed.”
In September last year, the dams had received good rains and the water level was at its peak. “We are expecting similar rains in September this year as well. This will help in maintaining the water reservoir at full capacity of the dams for a long time,” the official said.
The state’s irrigation department has so far released 13 thousand million cubic feet (TMC) of water from Khadakwasla into the Mutha river after the dams overflowed. Of the 29.15 TMC water reserves in the four dams, around 16-18 TMC is used by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
Apart from Pune, the collective stock in dams in the other five regions was more than last year’s stock. Earlier this week, the water level of Koyna Dam in Satara district had crossed the 100 TMC mark and it was progressing to attain 100% capacity of 105.24 TMC. The dam fills to its full capacity once a year during the peak monsoon period.
