42 killed in rain, landslides since October 12: Kerala CM

The Chief Minister said that so far 304 relief centers have been opened in the state.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday said that between October 12 and 20, 42 people have died due to rain and landslides, while six are missing.

The Chief Minister also said that 304 relief centers have been opened in the state. Financial assistance will be given to the affected people soon, he confirmed.

11 teams of NDRF have been deployed in the state for rescue operations and the Chief Minister said that along with helicopters of the Air Force and Navy, Army personnel are also involved in the rescue operation.

Thripunithura MLA K Babu, who is the lone Speaker from the opposition today, offered support to the state government, as well as expressed concern over the often happening situation in Kerala, which has claimed over 500 lives in the last four years. .

Mr Babu asked the state government whether there was any shortcoming in sending warnings to disaster prone areas and asked them to utilize the efficiency of the existing system to avoid loss of life and property in future.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department continued to warn of Orange Alert for parts of Kerala on Wednesday amid heavy rains. An orange alert has been issued for Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Idukki districts of Kerala.

The places along the banks of the Periyar river have been put on high alert by the Ernakulam district administration as the water released from the Idukki dam reached the flood prone areas of Aluva in Kochi on Wednesday morning.
