43% fewer tech privacy job roles than last year: Survey

New research from ISACA, in its ‘Privacy in Practice 2022 Survey Report’, reveals that technical privacy roles are more underfunded than they were last year. The report claimed that 41 percent of global respondents cited lack of competent resources as a major obstacle facing an organization to build a privacy program.

Respondents in India indicated that they have vacancies in both legal/compliance (31 per cent) and technical confidentiality roles (43 per cent). At least 21 percent said it takes three to six months to fill positions for legal/compliant privacy roles, while 25 percent of respondents indicated a similar time frame for filling open technical privacy positions.

To address the skills gap, 50 percent of respondents in India indicated they train non-privacy employees who are interested in moving into privacy roles. The report claimed that globally, the issue has only worsened since last year. 41 percent of global respondents cited a lack of competent resources as a major obstacle facing an organization in its ability to create a privacy program.

“Given the current emphasis and importance on data protection and privacy, respondents also largely expect privacy professionals to be only in greater demand, with 72 per cent of global respondents seeking increased demand for technical privacy roles and 63 per cent in demand.” are expected to take up legal/compliance roles,” the report said.

The report also indicated that respondents worldwide are looking for three key things, compliance/legal experience (62 percent), prior practical experience in a privacy role (56 percent), and technical experience (48 percent).

“Data compromise can cost an organization hundreds of millions of rupees, as well as loss of customer trust and damage to reputation, and it requires staff skilled in technical privacy measures to stay ahead of these threats. The Privacy in Practice 2022 survey report highlights how important it is for organizations to fill these positions and dedicate resources to data privacy.
