Five more cases of Omicron type of novel coronavirus were found in Karnataka, taking the total number to 19.

According to Karnataka Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar, five cases were detected in Dharwad, Bhadravati, Udupi and Mangaluru in Shivamogga district on Sunday.

He said a 54-year-old man from Dharwad, a 20-year-old woman from Bhadravati, an 82-year-old man and a 73-year-old woman from Udupi, and a 19-year-old woman from Mangaluru contracted the Omicron variant.

All infected people have been vaccinated with both doses of the CoviShield vaccine. Their travel history and contacts with international travelers are being traced.

The department said that none of them have any COVID-19 symptoms and were healthy.

The person isolated in Bhadravati was in contact with 218 people and all of them were tested. 26 of them have tested positive. The department said that their samples have been sent for further testing.

In addition, 18 people who were primary and secondary contacts of a 19-year-old student in Mangaluru were found to be COVID-19 infected.
