LUCKNOW: Within a fortnight of the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government coming back to power on March 10, at least 50 criminals have surrendered fearing police encounters or bulldozers rolling over their homes.
With placards across their necks carrying a message – I am surrendering, please don’t shoot – many wanted criminals went to police stations across the state and left on their own.
The trend started with absconding Gautam Singh, who was accused of kidnapping and extortion. He surrendered at Chhapia police station Gonda Within three days on March 15, 23 criminals bid farewell to the crime at Chilkana police station. Saharanpur in West Uttar Pradesh.
Later, the four liquor smugglers surrendered before the Deoband police with an affidavit stating that they would not commit the crime again.
This was followed by a series of surrenders in neighboring Shamli district, where 18 people accused of cow slaughter went to Thanabhavan and Gadhipukhta police stations to be taken into custody. In a few days, another wanted criminal Himanshu alias honey holding on to a placard begging the police not to shoot her when she surrendered Sirsaganj Police Station Firozabad.
ADG, Law and Order, Prashant Kumar He said that 50 criminals have not only surrendered, but have also resolved to give up the crime. He said that during this time two criminals were killed in the encounter and 10 others were arrested.
He said that to improve law and order, through micro-planning, prompt and strict action is being taken to create fear among criminals in every nook and corner of the state. Zero tolerance towards crime is not only about effective crackdown on mafia but renewed vigilance and intensive patrolling by UP-112. Also, there has been no communal riot in the state since 2017.
