A 50-foot single (almost round) rock split vertically at Narsappa Konda in Kurnool district’s Gonegandla village, causing shock waves among residents who ran out of their homes, fearing that the boulder would split further. Maybe and small rocks can roll on top of them. Houses around the hill.

Narsappa Konda was once spread over 5 acres, but gradually the settlement grew and the lone rock now stands there. A team of officials from the Adoni sub-collector’s office, including Adoni sub-collector Abhishek Kumar, visited the village on Tuesday and inspected the condition of the rock.

The authorities have decided to fix the vertical split and fill the gap with concrete and install some safety infrastructure at the base of the rock so that no untoward incident happens in future as well. Authorities asked nearby residents to evacuate their homes and provided police protection to ensure that people did not climb the rock or come close to it until it was declared safe.

The crack on the rock developed with a loud bang on Sunday, and officials attributed it to extreme heat in the area due to a heat wave. Officials estimate that the rock is 300 to 500 hundred years old and weighs about 5,000 tonnes.

One SC and one BC colony are presently situated around the hillock close to the rock.
